After screening the entries in the 75th International Photographic Salon (sponsored by Asahi Shimbun and the All-Japan Association of Photographic Societies with support from Canon Inc. and Canon Marketing Japan Inc.), the Screening Committee has selected a total of 130 works, comprised of 80 from overseas and 50 from within Japan, including six special prize winners (three from overseas and three from Japan).
There were 4,745 entries from 44 countries, with the greatest number from India (1,157 entries). Together with the 4,519 entries from within Japan, a total of 9,264 entries were received. The works were judged by an 11-member panel led by photographer Takeyoshi Tanuma.
Winning entrants were led by Iran in the overseas division with 15 works, followed closely by Vietnam with 13, India with 10, Bangladesh with 7, Myanmar with 6, and South Korea with 3 indicating an Asian nation momentum. China, Israel, Sri Lanka, and Rumania each had 2. Eighteen nations including UK, the United States and France had 1 each.
In Japan, Mie had the highest number of winning entrants with 6, followed by Aichi with 5, Saitama and Oita with 4 each, and Iwate, Akita, Tochigi, Tokyo, Nagano, Shizuoka, Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi and Fukuoka with 2 each.

The old ‘wrinkled grandmothers with grandchildren’ style is practically disappearing from the usual large numbers of entries from India, Viet Nam, and Bangladesh. This is an indication of social modernization. More entries from Russia, which formerly had interesting avant-garde composition, have become orthodox along with those from the United States and lacked novelty. Overall, passion was felt in Asian entries. The International Photographic Salon characteristically exhibits works with artistic colors and an avant-garde style. Digital composition techniques are advancing and it is becoming more difficult to distinguish them from straight photographic images.
This image lets us imagine the face of a child whose head can only be seen; the curiosity and lifestyle of the child come across. The photographic sense of innocence crouching is real and good. Curiosity is symbolic of all children. This wonderful image elicits viewer reaction and allows us to feel love.
The humorous fun of modern society can be sensed. The inclusion of a few more bathers would likely strengthen interest and contrast with the surreal fantasy image.
